Egypt’s Church Construction Law
Despite scattered demands for unified legislation governing the construction of all houses of worship, Egypt continues to maintain differing legal schemes for church and mosque construction.
Article 235 of the country’s new constitution reinforces this inequity when it mandates that the incoming House of Representatives issue a law to govern the building and renovation of churches.
As Egypt awaits a new parliament, the current administration has not moved to clear the backlog of church construction and renovation requests.
